PayPal Return URL is missing tx id value in querystring

By Andy at 22:15

You've added a PayPal payment button (URL: sandbox | live) and set the Return URL, but you aren't getting any transaction id in the querystring after returning back to your website's Return URL page.

We need the transaction id to query PayPal after returning back to your website, so that you can then save the transaction details against your client in your database.

To get the PayPal Return URLs to include the "tx=" querystring after returning back to your website, the seller's account needs to:-

  1. have a PayPal verified email, and
  2. enable Payment Data Transfer (PDT).

More info is available from PayPal here so RTM! Cool  (or follow the simple steps below!)

Here's how to enable the Return URL transaction code with PDT:-

  • Note: this is a resource for developers, hence the sandbox URLs
  • Login to the PayPal sandbox.
  • Select your test Business account and click "Enter Sandbox Test Site":-
  • Log in with your test Business acount password.
  • Note: the screenshots will look the same for when it's a live Business account on the live PayPal website.
  • Once logged in, click the Profile link under the My Account homepage:- (URL: sandbox | live)
  • Under the Selling Preferences column, select Website Payment Preferences:- (URL: sandbox | live)

    • Set Auto Return to On
    • Enter your Return URL

    • Turn on Payment Data Transfer

    • Click the Save button
      • You will then see a confirmation at the top of the page with your Identity Token.  For example: "AKT12B6mUjp-1idai7dzqKZweDcdGTBFIWcf1yklMDgMLdgEjLP4c67JUak".  This identity token is what you use in your code "auth_token".
